Description
This engraving of Dyburgh Abbey, Berwickshire, signed 'Ensign Erskine', was probably by David Stewart Erskine, 11th Earl of Buchan, a friend of George Henry Hutton, and fellow antiquary, who acquired the remains of the abbey in 1786. This is one of four views of Dryburgh Abbey in the Hutton Collection. Hugh de Moreville founded Dryburgh Abbey, near St Boswell’s in Berwickshire, in 1150 for the Premonstratensian Order of White Canons. Much of the abbey complex has been in ruins since the sixteenth century, and the site has a tranquil and deeply romantic atmosphere that Erskine has captured in this engraving. The Abbey held a special place in the heart of Sir Walter Scott and his and his wife's bodies are there.
