John Mix Stanley accompanied Isaac I. Stevens on his exploration of the Pacific Northwest to find a viable rail route from the Mississippi River to the Pacific Ocean. Stevens surveyed the 47th and 49th parallels - the northernmost route, which took them through Montana, Idaho and Washington.
