Description

A watercolour view of the interior of the sitting room and dressing room used by the Prince Consort at Holyroodhouse, Edinburgh.
This watercolour was commissioned by Queen Victoria as part of a series of four views of interiors of rooms in the Palace of Holyroodhouse. The rooms depicted by Greig were refurnished, by the Lord Chamberlain's orders, for that purpose between 9 June 1862 and 30 June 1863. This room is now known as the King's Bedchamber; the panelling, ceiling, painted overmantel and Delft tiles in the fireplace remain.
As with another watercolour by Grieg which depicts a room of the Prince Consort's (in a Scottish cottage used by the royal couple), an attempt has here been made to reconstruct the room as it was when in use by the Prince, such as, for example, including the detail of his slippers by the sofa.
