Description

Opaque watercolour painting of the Rock and the Fort at Tiruchirappalli, which house a number of temples connected by colonnades and pillared halls. At the bottom of the steps which lead to the top of the Rock is a temple dedicated to Gaṇeśa, followed by a linga shrine, and in the Fort is a large temple consecrated to Śiva as Tayumanavar, ‘the Lord who also became a mother’, shown here as a linga decorated with a garland. Opposite the sanctuary is the crouching Nandi. In the immediate proximity of the Tayumanavar shrine is another dedicated to his consort Sugandha Kuntalambal. The green-complexioned goddess stands in samabhanga with a flower in her right hand, her left hanging loose at her side. The two sanctuaries and the flagstaff are shown surrounded by a masonry wall, suggesting the Fort wall. A long flight of steps leads to the summit of the rocky outcrop, where the temple dedicated to Uchchipillayar (or ‘Tall Gaṇeśa’) is decorated with a fluttering flag.
