Description

This drawing shows Duniquaich Hill and its watchtower, which overlooks the Argyllshire town of Inveraray. The hill’s name derives from its physical resemblance to a drinking cup, or goblet. Dun means 'hill', while quaich is derived from the Gaelic word 'Cuach', which means 'shallow cup' or in modern terms, a 'drinking cup'. The artist of this drawing is unknown. The town of Inveraray is traditionally the headquarters of the Campbell Clan. The watchtower on the summit of Duniquaich Hill is 700 feet above sea level, and provides an eagle's view of Inveraray, the surrounding countryside and Loch Fyne. Given the history of clan warfare in Scotland and the reputation of the Campbell Clan, a lookout tower would have been an essential requirement for the town.
