Description

Watercolour painting on paper of a panoramic view of Agra Fort from the River Yamuna. In the foreground of the painting is the river, on which boats sail. The high red sandstone walls of the fort are the dominant feature of the painting, with attention given to the huge circular bastions projecting from the exterior walls and gateways. Above the sandstone walls, certain buildings within the fort are visible. From the left is the Akbari Mahal, followed by the Jahangiri Mahal. Next to this is the Khass Mahal, with two golden curved roofs flanking it. Next is the Shah Burj, a tower faced in white marble and crowned by a golden dome which projects out from the Fort’s walls. Following this is the Diwan-i Khass or audience hall and then the Moti Masjid, also known as the Pearl Mosque. To the right of the fort, a Union flag is shown flying. At the far right of the painting, on the banks of the river is a small rectangular object, which most likely represents the Great Gun of Agra that was removed from the fort after 1803 but got stuck on the river bank until it was destroyed in 1833. The painting is framed by a thick black line.
