Eglantine Balfour (1838?) (Depicted)
Description
Katherine Jane Ellice accompanied her husband, Edward J. Ellice Jr., secretary to Lord Durham, on board the H.M.S. "Hastings" to Canada. Lord Durham's suite left England on April 24, 1838 and arrived at Quebec on May 27, 1838. While on board the "Hastings", Mrs. Ellice made many sketches. This sketch of her sister, Tina, was probably done on May 25, 1838. On that date, Mrs. Ellice wrote the following in her diary:
"Awoke early. Tina went and asked the Sentry if there was to be a Sun rise this morning." (Canada: Oberon, 1975. p. 30) This watercolour shows Tina, (Miss Eglantine Balfour), from the right side, looking out her cabin window on board the H.M.S. "Hastings."
Watercolour removed from album. This work was originally glued to a secondary support. The album page was cut to frame the image that was glued to its verso. Original secondary support and mount attached separately.
