Description

This drawing shows the Kinross shoreline of Loch Leven in Fife, with the outline of Loch Leven Castle just visible on the very far left of the picture. The name of the island in the distance is Castle Island. Dating back to the thirteenth century, this castle is most famous for being the place where Mary Queen of Scots was imprisoned in June 1567. The Castle was gifted to the Douglas family by King Robert II in 1372. Sir William Douglas was Mary's gaoler during her imprisonment, although his younger son, Willie Douglas, helped Mary to escape in 1568, principally because he was besotted with the young queen. The Castle was bought from the impoverished Douglas family by Sir William Bruce in 1764. Since the eighteenth century, it has been a ruin.
