Description

The title along the bottom of the sheet reveals that William Daniell drew this sketch of the standing stones at Stenness, probably in 1818. The stones have been set in the context of their mountainous surroundings, and a figure gives perspective. There are another three views of the Stenness stones contained in the Hutton Drawings. William Daniell is more famous for his images of some of the more remote areas of India. His Uncle, Thomas, and Daniell travelled around India in the late 1800s visiting places, which were considered 'uncivilised’. As a result, their powerful representations caused much comment when they returned to this country. There are other sketches in the Hutton Drawings by William Daniell but they are of other Scottish locations. All together, they stand as a testament to Daniell’s skill in depicting his native landscape.
