Description

Sketch of a north-west view of St Fillan's Priory, Perthshire. It is dated September 8th 1820, and although unsigned by the artist, is probably the work of George Henry Hutton himself. A note under the title reads, 'with the Hills of Cruachandoren in the distance'. A second note, in the bottom right corner of the sketch, identifies 'The Road to Tynedrum'. This is one of four images relating to St Fillan's Priory in the Hutton Collection. The ruined eighth-century Culdee Priory of St Fillan is located in Strathfillan, at the east end of Loch Earn in Perthshire. This sketch gives a wider view of the setting than the other views of the priory in the Hutton Collection. One of the two buildings to the left of centre is probably the chapel of ease, which was still in use in the early nineteenth century. The ruined walls of the priory are evident slightly to the right of centre, beyond the farmland and sketched labourers that occupy the foreground. In the background are the dramatic peaks of Ben Cruachan and Ben Dorain.
