Description

This engraving shows St Mary's Collegiate Church and the Nungate Bridge. The artist has also chosen to detail much of the surrounding area, and has included part of the town and two men fishing on the banks of the River Tyne. The artist's name and the date have not been included. Several other drawings of St Mary's also form part of the Hutton Collection, including one that has very possibly been copied from this engraving. Situated in the south-east of Haddington, St Mary's Collegiate Church stands on the west bank of the River Tyne. A medieval cruciform church, it was built in the fourteenth century - completed in the fifteenth - and is decorated with typical medieval stone carvings, including green men and scallops. Almost 100 years after completion, St Mary's suffered extensive damage during the Siege of Haddington (1548-9). Although partial restoration work was carried out in the decades that immediately followed, it was not until the 1970s that the building was fully restored.
