Description

This sketch was made in July 1819 by an unknown artist. It shows the south view of the ruins of thirteenth-century Deer Abbey, near Old Deer in Aberdeenshire. It has a companion in the Hutton Collection. There is an earlier, 1796, watercolour by the same artist, of the same view. William Comyn, Earl of Buchan, founded deer Abbey in 1218. Monks, who were members of the Cistercian Order, occupied it until the seventeenth century when they abandoned it and it fell into disrepair.
