Description

This sketch shows the castle at Loch Orr, which is nowadays known as Lochore or Loch Ore Castle. A note at the foot of the drawing reads, 'Castle of Loch Orr, Fifeshire 1781'. This drawing was reproduced in France Grose's book, 'The Antiquities of Scotland', published in 1791. The name of the artist is not given, but it is likely that it was Hutton himself. Also known as, Inchgall Castle, Lochore Castle was built during the 1400s, and located near Ballingry in Fife. The castle is famously associated with the Wardlaw family, who gained control of the building following the marriage of Andrew Wardlaw of Torry sometime during the fifteenth century. Lochore Castle remained a possession of the Wardlaw family until the beginning of the seventeenth century.
