Description

This small watercolour came from a collection of watercolours, mainly comprising small paintings by George Cumberland (1754-1848). This artwork is one of a set of five pencil drawings on sheets from a sketch pad; three have been tinted with watercolour. The artist may have been on a 'Grand Tour' of sites in Italy. This artwork depicts the tombs on the Via Latina near Rome. The title and date ('March 25. 69') and initials are written in pencil lower right. The initials are difficult to decipher - possibly 'JHW' or 'THW', or 'HW' or something else. The drawing dates from not long after the tombs were discovered in 1857/58, but before they were expropriated by the Italian State in 1879.
