Description

First of two watercolours mounted on page 59. A view of two cottages. there is a thatcher at work on the roof. Four children are grouped at the foot of his ladder by a pile of reeds. A tree lined lane in front of the cottages can be seen disappearing into the right background. There is a man and a woman talking in the lane (the latter people are out of proportion). Inscriptions: [on image bottom left] "Nov. 11,56" / [on mount bottom left] "At Lower Bockhampton" / [on mount bottom middle] "Cottage destroyed (the cottage of the shoemaker in Mr. Hardy's "Under the Greenwood Tree" ?" / [on mount bottom right] "Sketch".
