Description

This drawing, made in 1781, depicts the ruins of Borthwick Castle, which is located beside the village of Borthwick, twelve miles south of Edinburgh. As the drawing shows, the castle stands strategically on the summit of a knoll, in order to make it more difficult to attack. The name of the artist is not included. Built in 1430 by the first Lord Borthwick, Borthwick Castle is a twin-towered baronial keep, steeped in history. It is particularly famous as the place where Mary, Queen of Scots and the Earl of Bothwell escaped to in 1567, after taking flight from Edinburgh. Local legend has it that Mary’s ghost haunts the Red Room in the castle. When the castle was besieged, Mary only escaped by disguising herself as a man. The ghost that is rumoured to haunt the castle is Mary dressed up as a page-boy.
