Description

Kilwinning Abbey, Ayrshire. This drawing is simply entitled 'Kilwinning'. It was drawn about 1789 by Captain Francis Grose, and reproduced in his book 'The Antiquities of Scotland', which was published by Samuel Hooper of London in 1791.This is one of three views of Kilwinning Abbey contained in the Hutton Collection, each by a different artist. St Winning reputedly founded the first church at Kilwinning in Ayrshire in AD 715. The Tironesian Abbey, built in 1162, was an offshoot of Kelso Abbey, but quickly became a highly important ecclesiastical centre in its own right. Like many Scottish abbeys, Kilwinning suffered great structural damage at the hands of Reformers in 1560, although a small part of it became a parish church.
