Description

Bloemaert was the most gifted member of a Dutch family of artists and the most important painter working in Utrecht during the first half of the 17th century. He was a leading representative of the elegant Dutch Mannerist style, known for sinuous, contorted forms. In the latter part of his long career, the Baroque style had been firmly established, and he was drawn to its more naturalistic tendencies. In this late drawing, he aptly draws from life using varied pen strokes and enlivens the scene with delicate touches of watercolor. Praised as clever and skilled by the art theorist Karel van Mander, Bloemaert depicts an unassuming subject, the dilapidated gateway to a rough-walled town. His drawings were often made in preparation for executing background elements in landscape paintings with Old and New Testament subjects.
