Description

This is the only drawing or sketch of this site in the Hutton Collection, and as it does not carry the name of any artist, it is likely to be the work of George Henry Hutton himself. Beneath the title, a handwritten note gives a brief description of the location and appearance of the chapel. Today the chapel in Cromarty dedicated to St Regulus has almost completely disappeared except for the foundations, but more substantial remains existed in Hutton's day, and are described in the memoirs of the nineteenth century geologist, preacher and author Hugh Miller, who was born in Cromarty. St Regulus is reputed to have arrived in Scotland around AD 345, and Cromarty is believed to have had a church from about the sixth century, but it is not known whether this church was the chapel of St Regulus. The legacy of St Regulus lives on in an Episcopal church bearing his name in modern Cromarty.
