Description

Shows group of six men sitting around a rough wooden table lit by smoking candle in bottle. A waiter dishes food from a large pot at right. A saddle is placed on a rafter above the table, and tools or tramping gear rest against the wall at right.

Dated ca 1890 because Mrs Birley is listed in Wises 1890-91 as being a hotel keeper at Glenorchy. Previously she had been listed as a hotel-keeper in Queenstown. By 1892 Wises lists J.K. Birley as the hotel-keeper at Mt Earnslaw hotel, Glenorchy; that may or may not be a grander establishment than the hut shown here. The exterior of the hut is assumed to be the one shown in A-169-031 "at foot of Earnslaw". However the artist also made a trip to Fiordland including Manapouri in 1881 and the earlier date may be correct
