Description

Jugal Kishore Gosain of Delhi with his attendant Gokuldas and a group of Hindu religious men. In the centre is Jugal Kishore, a Hindu ascetic of the Gosain sect. He is shown seated on a red mat and holding a piece of paper in his right hand. His left hand holds his right foot. A large white bolster is placed behind him. He wears a shawl draped over his shoulders and decorated with gold edging and border. He also wears a hat decorated with gold and gold jewellery. Standing behind him on the left of the page is a figure holding a fly-whisk, who is identified as ‘Gomgu Ram – a brahmin’. Two men are shown seated below this figure, one identified as ‘Juspet Ron’ (?) and the other identified as ‘Gokul - a Brahmin’ both wearing colourful turbans. ‘Juspet Ron’ holds a pouch in his right hand. On the right hand side of the page, seven figures are shown seated, facing the central figure of Jugal Kishore. They all wear white clothing and turbans. Two figures wear shawls over their shoulders and another, in the lower right corner, has religious namam (emblems) painted on his face. The figures are identified as (from left to right): ‘Chyn Sook – of the Khutree tribe’, Sag Dehan Khutree’, ‘Beer Sing’, Doolee Chund’, ‘ Aloohee Purshaa’ and ‘Shao Lae’. Behind the figures are painted trees and foliage with a low balustrade separating the figures from the plants.
