Description

This light pencil sketch shows the south-west view of Beauly Priory, which lies close to where the Beauly River enters the Beauly Firth. The date reads 25th August 1815 and it includes a note of the location in the bottom left-hand corner. The artist has sketched much of the surrounding area, including Beauly River, nearby buildings, trees and fields. The Hutton Collection also includes drawings of the south view and north-east view. Local landowner, John Bisset founded Beauly Priory around 1230. Dedicated to the Virgin Mary and John the Baptist, it was one of three houses established in Scotland by the Valliscaulian Order: the other two being Ardchattan and Pluscarden. The Valliscaulian remained at Beauly until 1510, at which time the priory became a Cistercian House.
