Description

A watercolour showing a view of Loch Fyne from Douglas Water Point. The loch is shown in the foreground with a section of its banks shown to the left. A small building is shown on the banks of the loch, with trees shown behind. Hills are shown in the background, with two small sailing boats shown on the water below. Inscribed lower left: Loch Fyne f[ro]m the Douglas Water Point looking towards Iverary Sept: 28. 1875. Queen Victoria stayed at Inverary Castle from 22 to 29 September 1875 as a guest of the Duke of Argyll, the father of her son-in-law the Marquess of Lorne. The Queen's daughter Princess Louise had married the Marquess of Lorne on 21 March 1871. On 28 September 1875 Queen Victoria went on a carriage ride along the loch as far as the Douglas Water Point with her daughters Princess Louise and Princess Beatrice. In her journal entry of that day, Queen Victoria describes how they "stopped to sketch, between frequent showers, the view & lights being so lovely".
