Description

This drawing, which is dated 1796, does not carry the name of the artist, and may be one of George Henry Hutton's own works. This is one of eight views of Peebles Cross Church in the Hutton Collection. Many of the images in the Hutton Collection are quite rough sketches, but the fine detail of this suggests the high level of artisanship that was involved in carving the stones for this arched doorway. Arched doorways and windows were particularly popular features of important medieval buildings. The pointed arch, like the type shown here, was the most identifiable feature of the Gothic period of medieval architecture, and began to replace rounded Romanesque arches in Britain in the twelfth century. Peebles Cross Church, founded in 1261, dates from a little later in the Gothic period.
