Description

This drawing shows the remains of the old priory on Priory Island in Loch Tay, Perthshire. The drawing is dated 1789, and may be the work of George Henry Hutton himself, as no other artist is credited on the page. This is one of at least five items relating to Loch Tay in the Hutton Collection. Priory Island, at the east end of Loch Tay, is also known by the Scots Gaelic name Eilean nan Bannoamh, which means 'Isle of the Female Saints'. This name is a reference to Queen Sybilla, wife of King Alexander I of Scotland, who is believed to have died on the island in 1122 or slightly earlier. The island later became known as Priory Island, after the priory reputedly founded there by monks from Scone, in memory of Queen Sybilla.
