Description

Initialled: "MRKerr". The inscription contains a rhyme relating to the 17th-century owner and developer of Rycote Park, Sir Montague Bertie. Montague Bertie employed Capability Brown to redesign the Park and this may refer to his work demolishing old trees as part of this.
Inscribed, upper edge and lower edge: "The Oak of the Prophecy at Rycote / No. 3. / I've lost my head. The Owl has fled / Which proves the Prophet wrong / For the Head of Bertie's strong and hearty / And bidding came to be so long / Lower edge, "Old Oak Rycote Park, loc'd [located] Abingdon.".
Collective Title: From the first of three bound volumes containing sketches by Vice-Admiral Lord Mark Robert Kerr (1776-1840).
