Description
A farmer carrying a fork over his left shoulder, approaching with a little barrel hanging from straps in his other hand, into the foreground where a plough is lying on the grass, in the background, another man directs a plough drawn by a team of four oxen whipped on by a third farmer, in the distance a town on a low hill. 1801. Hand-coloured etching.
Inscription
Lettered below the image with a quotation from Thomson's 'The Seasons: Spring', "Ye Gen'rous Britons Venerate the Plough", a dedication to Lord Carrington the president, and the vice-president and board, of agriculture, and "Designed, Drawn & Engraved by V. Green, Engraver to His Majesty / Published and Sold by V. Green, No. 2 New Road, opposite Fitzroy Square, London, June 4th. 1801"
