Description

Watercolour over pencil heightened with touches of bodycolour. William Brocas was the third son of the landscape painter Henry Brocas (1762-1837). He was based in Dublin and exhibited mainly portraits and figure studies at the Society of Artists in 1809 and 1812 and at the Royal Hibernian Academy, Dublin, from 1828 to 1863. He was President of the Society of Irish Artists which held its first exhibition at the Royal Irish Institution in College Street in 1843. was elected an Associate of the Royal Hibernian Academy in 1854, and a full Member in 1860. He lived at 15 Henry Street, Dublin from about 1825.
