Description

Turner's earliest drawings were topographical studies - views of picturesque monuments, or distant prospects of towns, concentrating on the buildings of chief architectural interest. By the 1840s, he had developed his own distinctive approach to this type of picture-making, creating images in which atmosphere, as suggested by richly coloured washes of watercolour, is of greater significance to the sense of place than a fastidious representation of individual detail.
