Description

This sketch shows the south view of Jedburgh Abbey. The artist has chosen to sketch it from a considerable distance and has included much of the surrounding countryside. Jedburgh Abbey is situated on the north bank of the Jed Water, Jedburgh. It was established, initially as a priory, in the early-twelfth century by King David I. Due to the abbey's close proximity to the English border, it was the scene of much fighting between the Scots and the English and suffered repeated attacks throughout the centuries.

The abbey was founded in 1138 by King David I. The building was modelled on European cathedrals, possibly in a gesture of defiance against England.
