Description

Shows a group of four Maori whare with four cloaked figures seated on the ground, two of them seated together.

The closest whare has verandah posts on the two visible sides, whereas the others have a pole only in front of the doorway end.

Date indicated by note ("1904?") on backing board (now discarded).

Whatiwhatihoe was the location of one of the homes of Tawhiao the Maori King. An 1885 photograph by Alfred Burton in Auckland Art Gallery (ref. 1997/34/4), titled "Whatiwhatihoe (King's Residence)", shows this same group of whare. However a drawing by Edward Payton dated 1887 or 1888, entitled "Whatiwhatihoe, residence of the Maori King" shows a whare with a decorated or carved barge board. It is possible that none of the whare shown in this painting was the specific one used by Tawhiao.
