Description

This drawing shows the east façade of St Duthac's Collegiate Church in Tain, and is dated 1815. The drawing is unsigned by any artist, and is probably the work of George Henry Hutton himself. There are several drawings from Tain in the Hutton Collection, the majority of them depicting this church. St Duthac's Church originates 1360 but was only converted to a collegiate church in 1487, by Thomas Hay, Bishop of Ross. Collegiate churches supported a 'college' of monks or canons who were devoted to theological study and contemplation, but who were often also dedicated to holding special prayers or masses for the family or individual who founded the church. Until the rise of Protestantism in the sixteenth century, the wealthy were often encouraged to found or support churches, on the premise that this was a 'good work' that would help to gain salvation for their souls.
