Description

Two trees framing sluiceway, center, in mountainside. Cabin left. The Gregory and Potball gold mines in Colorado were the most productive of those opened up by the Pike’s Peak gold rush of 1859. The sketch was makde on a trip to the Rocky Mountains in preparation for a mural, “Westward the Course of Empire Takes its Way,” commissioned in 1860 for the southwest staircase of the Capitol at Washington.
