TWW Comment
This is the oldest Anglican church parish in Australia, established in June 1793. The first building was a wattle and daub construction that was burned by convicts in 1798. This painting depicts the second building, which was in use from 1810 to 1856 and had the dubious distinction of being dubbed 'the ugliest church in Christendom'. The current, Victorian Gothic church was built between 1848 and 1856; the architect Edmund Blacket based his designs on Magdalen Tower in Oxford.
