Description

This drawing, made in July 1790, depicts the ruins of Lindores Abbey. A note at the bottom of the page reads, 'Lindores Abbey Perthshire July 17 - 1790'. It is not known who made this drawing. Although the artist writes that the location is 'Perthshire', Newburgh is now regarded as part of Fife. Located near Newburgh on the southern banks of the River Tay, Lindores Abbey was established in 1191 by David, Earl of Huntingdon. It was a Tironesian Abbey, and was dedicated to St Mary, St Andrew and All Saints. During the Scottish Reformation, it was attacked by mobs in 1543 and 1559, which destroyed it. Only a few fragments of the church and the bell-tower now remain.
