Description

A watercolour view of the Montreal Market Place. In the foreground people and horse drawn carriages are depicted. In the background are several architectural structures.
The buildings in this composition are the same as in John Lambert's "The Place d'armes at Montreal". A reproduction of Lambert's can be viewed in Montreal: A Pictorial Record. Volume 1. 1963. p.12, plate 13.
This work was inventoried on the Sotheby's list as a George Heriot but has since been attributed to Paul Sandby junior. Paul Sandby junior was with the 21st regiment of foot and was stationed in Canada 1789-1793. Jim Burant attributed the work to Sandby. The work will be kept with the Heriots.
