Conway Mordaunt Shipley was a naval officer and artist who was known to have visited Singapore in the mid-19th century. Depicting the landscape from a high viewpoint and emphasized further by the wide vistas and the silhouetted figures enroute to its interiors, Singapore from Signal Hill highlights the development of the settlement in relation to its natural boundaries.
