Description
Sir Hugh Hastings (died 1347), from a brass in Elsing Church, Norfolk, study prepared for, but not used in Stothard's 'The Monumental Effigies of Great Britain', published by Mrs Anna Eliza Bray, 1817-32, one of a large group of studies for this volume; almost three-quarter length, male figure, standing to front, with hands held in attitude of prayer, resting head against pillow supported by two angels, and wearing armour, and surcoat, the latter and his shield bearing coat of arms, "or, a maunche diapré gules, in chief, a label of three points, azure". Pen and black ink and watercolour, with graphite, squared for transfer.
