View of the prisoner camp used to hold captives from the Napoleonic Wars and later the War of 1812. It was decommissioned in 1815 and at the time of the painting was used as a receiving depot for escaping slaves from the US until around 1818, after which it became a quarantine hospital for immigrants arriving from Europe (particularly Ireland).
