Shah Jahan was later deposed by his nephew, and imprisoned in the red fort, seen to the right, where he eventually died. His captors had, however, allowed to him to be incarcerated in a room from which he could see the Taj Mahal, further down the river The red fort at Agra was built by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan The Taj Mahal, seen in the distance, was raised by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan as a mausoleum for his favourite wife, known as Mumtaz-i-Mahal, who died in 1629
