Description

Opaque watercolour painting on European paper of a Sattani and his wife. The couple, dressed in russet robes, stand against a background of trees and shrubs. He wears a lungi tied at the waist by an angavastra (shawl), a shawl, turban, golden chain and a garland of tulsi beads. Namams (emblems) are drawn on his forehead, neck, upper arms and chest. In his left hand he carries a large square fan made of palm leaves, with a Tengalai namam drawn on it, and in his right hand he holds a basket. His wife wears, draped over her head, a nine-yard sari with a temple motif border, with earrings on the helix and earlobe, a choker with a pendant and a longer chain. In her hands she carries a ribbed pot.
