Description

Shows a large group of some thirty or more Maori men (thirty are visible with more implied behind) performing a haka, all brandishing rifles held by the barrel end, with the butt uppermost. All are grimacing, some with tongues projecting, and are depicted as they leap with both feet off the ground. In the right distance is a stretch of water, with canoes pulled up on the far shore, and the wooden fence of a village beyond.

The original watercolour drawing made for a wood engraving published as the frontispiece to "The story of New Zealand, past and present, savage and civilised", volume 1, by A S Thomson (London, Spottiswoode, 1859).
