Description

Watercolour painting on paper, of the pietra dura decoration on the screen surrounding the cenotaphs of Shah Jahan and Arjumand Banu Begam inside the Taj Mahal. The painting shows one of the floral borders of the screen, created by inlaying precious and semi precious stones into the white marble that covers the Taj Mahal. The design created here is of a central flower out of which scrolling floral vines and cornucopias emerge. These are surrounded by a thin black border of marble inlay. The design is repeated across the top of the screen. The painting is framed by a thick black line.
