Description

In the background of this watercolour, the Temple Bar gateway can be seen. Commissioned by King Charles II and attributed to Sir Christopher Wren, the gateway stood at the junction where the Strand meets Fleet Street for more than 200 years. In 1878 it was disassembled to make way for the widening of Strand and Fleet Street. In 1880, the brewer Henry Meux, at the instigation of his wife Valerie Susan Meux, bought the arch and re-erected it at their Hertfordshire country estate, Theobalds Park. In 2004, the arch returned to the City of London, where it now stands in Paternoster Square.
Inscription reads: [on shop fronts] Boot Maker / The Falcon Tavern / Fine Ales ... Wines ... Spirits.
