Description

Robert Wilson Wiber was the ‘Second Master’ at the Raffles Institution, Singapore, from January 1844. Raffles Institution (originally known as the Singapore Institution) was founded in 1823. Just behind the tall ship on the right of this watercolour, a hidden spire denotes the Roman Catholic Cathedral of the Good Shepherd, completed in 1849. The triple-bayed building immediately in front of this spire is the Raffles Institution, completed in 1835. This building also housed Singapore’s first public library, the forerunner of the present-day National Library. Other identifiable Singaporean landmarks in this watercolour include the second St Andrew’s Church on the right of the hill, and the iconic Government House and its flagstaff on the hill (present-day Fort Canning Hill).
