Lough Leane is the Lower Lake (https://www.britannica.com/place/Lower-Lake). The large rock at the entrance to Ross Bay is named "Prison Island" or "O'Donoghue's Prison". According to local folklore, the chieftain who ruled at Ross Castle, O'Donoghue, would chain his political prisoners, or serious wrong-doers, to it.
