Description

This image shows plan and side elevation technical drawings of St Salvator's Chapel in St Andrews, and the church of St Monans. A list of the areas of each church appears in a content section in the middle of the drawing, with accompanying numbers for identification purposes. Alexander Morton made this drawing around 1813. Also known as the Old College, St Salvator's Chapel and Tower lies at the heart of the medieval St Andrews, and was founded in 1450 by Bishop James Kennedy as the College of the Holy Saviour. Protestant reformers damaged it during the Reformation, and it was rebuilt from 1680 onwards. St Monans Church dates back to the thirteenth century. King David II ordered the church built, after surviving a terrible storm in the River Forth. English soldiers burnt it down in 1544, but the town rebuilt it in 1646. Unusually, an eighteenth century ship hangs from the church's ceiling.
