Description

Watercolour painting sparsely coloured on paper, of the pietra dura decoration on Shah Jahan’s cenotaph in the Taj Mahal. The painting shows a close up detail of one of the flowers which is created using precious and semi-precious stones inlaid into the white marble top of the cenotaph. Two of these flowers flank the symbolic pen case in the centre of the marble top. The flower is a fantastical creation starting with one flower out of which grows a vine with then connects with a trumpet shaped flower out of which blooms numerous different flowers and another scrolling vine which again ends in a red flower. The painting is framed by a thick black line.
