Description
The interior of the Crystal Palace at the opening of the Great Exhibition, large crowds filling the building, Queen Victoria and her family standing on a central dais, large numbers of courtiers and foreign dignitaries in attendance on the royal family including the Duke of Wellington, the Archbishop of Canterbury giving a blessing, soldiers surrounding the throne, journalists to the left writing about the event, people filling the upper galleries, a large fountain to the foreground (1851). Hand-coloured etching.
Inscription
Lettered below image "Taken on the spot by George Cruikshank" "Published by David Bogue, 86, Fleet Street, London, June 29th 1851" and "The Opening of the Great Industrial Exhibition of All Nations. By Her Most Gracious Majesty Queen Victoria and His Royal Highness Prince Albert on the 1st of May 1851. The view is taken from the South West Gallery at the time when the Archbishop is offering up a Prayer for the Divine Blessing upon the objects of this Great Exhibition"
