Description

Thomas Malton the Younger specialised in painting architecture. He studied at the Royal Academy where he won gold and silver medals. He was one of the most prolific draughtsmen of his time despite having lost a leg in childhood. As well as making his living from architectural drawings and s, Malton also taught art. One of his pupils was the artist Joseph Turner, who went on to be one of the greatest painters of his age. This picture shows the Royal Crescent, one of Bath's most famous landmarks, being built. The Crescent was designed by John Wood the Younger, one of the architects responsible for building Georgian Bath. If you look closely at the picture you can see that the far windows have not been finished, and the chinmey stack has not yet been put on. Few views of Bath show builders at work, but they must have been a constant presence on the city’s streets. This picture is not necessarily true to life, as it was painted in the artist’s studio rather than at the Royal Crescent itself, but it gives an idea of the work that would have been going on all the time on Bath’s streets.
